Massive world building + character background
Kind of wanna splurge out Anant's story more indepth, even if this is kinda spoilery for, well, them.
First thing first, Anant's world closely resembled Earth. It existed at the optimal distance from a Sun-like star, had an ocean, plenty of plants and wildlife, and, of course, humans. They were rather technologically advanced (about twenty minutes into the future), and it also had a benevolent God that presided over it.
That was all well and good until their Star exploded.
It was due to fickle nature, it was supposed to happen, etc, and the planet was to be wiped out. It had been written down, and the God was supposed to accept that this would happen. The God wouldn't die, and would simply be reassigned to another planet to guide the beings that lived there as it did with this Planet, until it was time for them to die. Sort of like a cruel, endless cycle.
However this God decided to spit routine in the eye, and did something very crazy. Basically the God intended to teleport the entire planet to another solar system, one with a stable star and at the correct distance. Things would be a bit rough for a while as the planet adjusted to it, with a few disasters and shit happening, but in the long term, things would return to how they were, and humans always had the uncanny ability to thrive no matter the hardships.
The God overestimated their power, however. They were unable to teleport the planet the thousands of light years necessary. Instead the God ended up teleporting the planet extremely close to a red dwarf star, causing it to be tidal-locked (stationary) and eliminating the very concept of night and day.
This event is known as 'When the Sky broke', and the human race was very nearly wiped out. Colonies existed before the whole star blowing up fiasco, so it was mostly the humans who lived within those colonies that survived. The earth became inhabitable, most of the plant-life dying off due to the red dwarf star's radiation, as well as most of the wildlife. The fact that tiny pockets of humanity survived out in those harsh wastes was a miracle in and of itself.
What happened to the God? Well the strain was too much for it. After failing to teleport the planet successfully, it pretty much exploded into a million pieces, its physical body now just an empty husk buried into the sands of the wastes. The god's soul pieces were scattered amongst the world, and gave birth to the Mages that lived there.
Yup. All Mages in Anant's world possess a piece of the god. The level of power they possess depends on how big the piece is. The bigger it is, the more powerful they are, and this causes strange side effects...
Which bring us to Anant. Yes, Anant is fully and utterly human, and, yes, they possess a piece of the god within them, which gives birth to their powerful magic. They're somewhat disconnected from reality due to their upbringing, and the God piece, as it makes them perceive the world in a rather...peculiar way. They see colours more vividly, see thoughts and people in colours and shapes (although they can actually see the people, it's just superimposed with weird freaky hallucination type things). Of course Anant can't really describe this, as they think everyone sees the world like this.
Another side effect of this is that Anant is drawn to others that possess God pieces as well. This is the subconscious desire of the God to reunite into one being, even if the only way for that to happen would be if Anant devoured the souls of all of the Mages in existence (as when Mages die, the soul just breaks off and goes to another host). Anant had no plans of ever doing this, of course, however they have done it unconsciously.
Such as, if they're near a Mage when they die, the soul piece is immediately drawn to Anant and rejoins with their God piece, making it bigger. As most Mages live in the wastes, almost all of the people Anant has ever encountered, and therefore been near when they die, have been Mages. If Anant stayed alive for several decades, no doubt Anant would devour all of the God pieces, and be reborn as a new God.
Although even then, the chances of that happening are very very slim.
There we are. Just some interesting info on Anant!
